Appointment of Erik Lillquist, J.D., as Interim Provost

Message from Katia Passerini, Ph.D., Interim President to the Seton Hall Community:

Photo of Interim Provost Lillquist, J.D."Today, I am very pleased to announce that Erik Lillquist, J.D., has been appointed the University’s Interim Provost.

I am grateful to him for agreeing to lead in this role, which is the latest in his outstanding record of service since joining Seton Hall Law in 1999. He arrived as a professor and then served as Vice Dean of the school for six years. While he was a member of the Law School faculty, his work was published in highly regarded law journals and has been cited by the Supreme Court.

He moved to the South Orange campus in 2015 as Associate Provost for Academic Projects, and most recently served as Associate Provost for Strategy and Finance. In this capacity, he focused on academic administration in the areas of University policy, budget and finance, human resources and long-term strategy. Specifically, he led the implementation of Responsibility Centered Management (RCM) budgeting; the development of Seeds of Innovation; and the fulfillment of key revisions to the Faculty Guide, among other initiatives.

In addition, he has been deeply involved in providing for improvements to academic spaces, helping to achieve many substantial upgrades to Seton Hall’s learning and common areas over the past five years.

When COVID emerged in 2020, he helped create the financial plan that enabled the University to emerge stronger after the pandemic. He also worked on our return-to-teaching initiatives that Fall.

In his new role, the Interim Provost will ensure continuity for Academic Affairs in making progress on major initiatives. He will advance Seeds of Innovation as part of our continuing effort to rebalance administrative and instructional expenses in favor of instruction; build on our success in hiring more than 60 full-time faculty; ensure the conclusion of a successful reaccreditation process with Middle States; and further develop new undergraduate and graduate programs.

Interim Provost Lillquist is an innovative and highly effective leader who is dedicated to elevating the Seton Hall experience for our entire community. I would like to reiterate my appreciation to him and invite you to join me in welcoming him to his new post."
