Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute Welcomes Lt. Col. Marisol Chalas to Advisory Council

The Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute at Seton Hall University is proud to welcome Lieutenant Colonel Marisol Chalas to its Advisory Council. A decorated military officer, trailblazer and advocate for Latina leadership, Lt. Col. Chalas brings to the Institute a commitment to service, representation and empowerment.

Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Massachusetts, Lt. Col. Chalas made history as the first Latina National Guard Black Hawk helicopter pilot in the United States. Over her more than 30-year military career, she has served in various leadership roles, exemplifying the values of valor, perseverance and excellence. She breaks the mold having developed skills in nuclear technology. Her dedication to uplifting the next generation through education, mentorship and service makes her a powerful addition to the Institute’s mission of cultivating servant leaders.

“Having Lt. Col. Chalas join our advisory council is such an honor and an inspiration for our students. We have a Smithsonian cited history maker,” said Lori Tarke, executive director of the Latino Institute. “Her presence encourages our students to have the courage to be the first, to earn that moment and make an impact. Her presence is the dream of Joseph and Carmen Ana realized.”

In her new role, Lt. Col. Chalas will help guide the Institute’s efforts to become a premier location that immerses students in Latino history, language and culture while providing financial, academic and professional support. “I’m honored to join the Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute,” said Chalas. “Mentorship and cultural connection made a difference in my journey, and I’m excited to give back by helping others grow into their full potential.”
