Panel on 'Unmasking Ethical Foundations in the Time of COVID: What We Owe to Each Other'  

Over the spring and much of the summer, Professor Bryan Pilkington held weekly conversations with leading experts from medicine, nursing, and the health sciences, as well as political theorists, economists, ethicists, philosophers and legal experts.

After a brief hiatus the COVID Ethics Series, which was recently discussed in the European Journal of Medicine and Natural Sciences, is back.

Focused on the impact of COVID-19, the topic of conversation this week will be "Unmasking Ethical Foundations in the Time of COVID: What We Owe to Each Other," and will feature a panel of multi-disciplinary experts about the pledges, oaths, and codes of ethics that underlie individual, professional, and community responses to the pandemic.

The panel will feature Philosophy Professor Thomas Cavanaugh, Ph.D., who teaches medical ethics at the University of San Francisco. In 2015 Professor Cavanaugh's first-year seminar, "What Is Wisdom?" won an Enduring Questions National Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. His most recent work, focused on the Hippocratic Oath, looks at the history of medicine and what he finds to be the exclusively therapeutic basis upon which the medical profession was founded; published in 2018 by Oxford University Press, the book is entitled Hippocrates' Oath and Asclepius' Snake: The Birth of the Medical Profession.

The panel will convene on Monday, August 24, at 4:30-5:30 p.m. EDT.
"As COVID-19 continues to affect communities across the globe, plans and precautions for returning to semblances of normalcy vary," said Professor Bryan Pilkington. "This conversation will attempt to get to the heart of what informs our obligations to others in a pandemic from varying professional perspectives. When the rubber hits the road, what do oaths, pledges, and commitments we have made to each other, our professions, and our communities amount to?"

Pilkington, an associate professor in the School of Health and Medical Sciences at Seton Hall University and the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy and the Editorial Advisory Boards of HealthCare Ethics Committee Forum and Christian Bioethics, and is a Junior Scholar at the Paul Ramsey Institute.

In addition to Professor Cavanaugh, the panel will include:

• Linda Siracusa, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Medical Sciences, Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine
