President’s Message Regarding Yesterday’s Verdict in Minneapolis
April 21, 2021
Dear Members of the Seton Hall Community,
The Holy Father, Pope Francis, the teachings of our Church and the foundations of humanity remind us that human life is sacred.
Yesterday’s guilty verdicts against former police officer Derek Chauvin were an expression of that immutable truth. And while George Floyd’s family and friends have received a small measure of justice, no punishment levied by the court system will bring Mr. Floyd back.
The verdicts may have provided a certain amount of solace for some, while others may have experienced panic and fear as they revisited the circumstances of Mr. Floyd’s death. Whatever your feelings, I hope they reinforce your determination to create a world where life is sacred.
We have a long way to go in ensuring that justice is applied fairly and consistently throughout society as we strive for a more perfect union. As a Catholic university we have an opportunity — and an obligation — to work together against the forces of ignorance, bigotry and violence. And may we continue to do just that.
As always, counseling resources are available for students through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and employees through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Campus Ministry provides additional support and can be reached at (973) 761-9545.
We have much work to do, but I am confident that together we can help elevate our nation into a reflection of Christ-like care and compassion for all of humanity.
Sincerely,
Joseph E. Nyre, Ph.D.
President
