IHS Schools Donate Medical Supplies in Response to the COVID-19 Health Pandemic

Seton Hall’s College of Nursing and the School of Health and Medical Sciences, along with the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University, have donated a portion of their in-stock personal protective equipment to area organizations in need.
The College of Nursing was asked by Atlantic Health System to donate any PPE that was in the College's inventory. Because the PPE is shared between all three schools at the Interprofessional Health Campus in Nutley, a third of the inventory was delivered to Chilton Medical Center, Pompton Plains, New Jersey, by a faculty member, Beverly Kass, D.N.P., R.N., who is a former employee of the hospital. The PPE donation included gowns, face shields and gloves. Clinical Placement Coordinator Kathryn Tarpey Balsamo, M.S.N., A.P.N., served as the direct contact for the agencies who were seeking donations while Kathryn Sanok, M.S.N., R.N., coordinator of the Clinical Skills Lab, and Robert Scoloveno, Ph.D., R.N., director of simulation, facilitated collection and delivering of the supplies.
"During this unprecedented time, nurses unselfishly remain on the front lines caring for patients without thought to the danger they may encounter," said Dean Marie C. Foley, Ph.D., R.N. "I have never been so proud to be a part of this profession which epitomizes servant leadership. Our faculty likewise is committed to a mentorship model of servant leadership. They practice what they preach and our students follow in their footsteps."
The PPE from the School of Medicine will be deployed among the healthcare workers in the Hackensack Meridian Health network. Hackensack Meridian Health has also joined the state's call in asking community members who wish to donate supplies to email [email protected], the state's Office of Emergency Management, which is coordinating donations on behalf of healthcare providers throughout the state and is best equipped to organize the effort.
The School of Health and Medical Sciences plans to donate its supplies to Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, New Jersey. Dean Brian B. Shulman, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, stated: "At Seton Hall, developing servant leaders who will make a difference is a priority. Our health science students learn in a community informed by Catholic principles and universal values about the importance of possessing integrity, compassion and a commitment to helping others — which, in turn, helps them become better healthcare professionals and better people in the long run."
