The Center for Global Health Studies, based at the Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations, announced the debut of a new peer-reviewed journal, Global Health Governance. The biannual online journal, provides a platform for academic experts and practitioners
from a variety of disciplines to explore global health issues and their implications
for governance and security at national and international levels. Yanzhong Huang,
assistant professor at the Whitehead School, is the Center’s director and is also
the Editor-in-Chief of Global Health Governance. The new publication, Huang says,
“is the first peer-reviewed journal in the nation explicitly devoted to the new health
security paradigm.”
The first issue of Global Health Governance explores how citizens’ health affects
the state’s political, economic and social stability and viability as well as its
international presence. The issue also addresses the unique challenges public health
issues pose in terms of governance. Measuring and responding to public health concerns
often requires governing bodies to use new analytical tools and a more focused research
agenda. Huang explains, “By examining health governance at both regional and global
levels, we hope the Journal’s first issue will not only clarify some of the conceptual
misunderstandings, but also point to new directions to study global health challenges.”
The launch of Global Health Governance, has been met with approval by many leaders
in global health. Among them, Dr. Yu Dongbao, director of China’s State Council AIDS
Working Committee Office, expressed interest in exploring opportunities for collaboration
with the Center. The Journal has also been featured by the Pacific Health Summit (PHS) website as an “Innovation Highlight.”
The Journal is currently published biannually, with the goal of becoming a quarterly
journal in the future. The next issue is scheduled to come out in September.
