Exploring Careers Beyond the Field with Sports Media and Business Academy

Image of a sports player talking to a supervisor. If you’re a high school student passionate about sports, media or business – or all of the above – Seton Hall University has the perfect summer opportunity for you. The Sports Media and Business Academy, a new five-day immersive program, is designed to give students an inside look at the multi-billion-dollar sports industry; from business strategies and media production to the societal impact of sports.

The program will be held from July 21 to 25, 2025, at Seton Hall’s South Orange campus, with classes running Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Over the course of 25 hours of expert-led instruction, students will explore the behind-the-scenes business of sports, including financial models, industry growth and innovation. They’ll also take a deep dive into sports media, examining how content is produced, distributed and consumed across different platforms in today’s changing digital world.

But it’s not just about business and media: this program also tackles some of the biggest issues in sports today, such as amateurism, race, gender equity and ethics. Students will discuss how these factors shape the sports industry and the larger societal conversations happening around them.

This program is taught by B.J. Schecter, who has more than 30 years of experience in sports media as a writer, editor and executive, with 20 years at Sports Illustrated alone. His career portfolio includes Sports Illustrated, The Boston Globe, Baseball America and 3STEP Sports. Recently, he started Schecter Media, a multimedia creative and content strategy company. Currently, Schecter is Executive Director of the Center for Sports Media, which he helped build and spearhead its launch in 2021.

In 2024, the program featured guest speakers from prominent sports organizations and media outlets, who shared their insights and offered students a glimpse into the professional world they aspire to enter. Guests included Peter King, John Fanta, Matt Loughlin, Charles Grantham, Len DeLuca, Bob Boland and Devon Corneal. In total, Schecter brought in 10 industry experts in the five days.

This academy is perfect for students considering a career in sports management, media, marketing or business. Whether you dream of working in sports broadcasting, journalism, team management or sponsorships, this program will provide a solid foundation of knowledge and hands-on experience. Plus, it’s a great way to get a taste of college-level learning at Seton Hall and connect with like-minded peers.

If you’re ready to turn your love for sports into a potential career path, don’t miss this opportunity. Register now and spend part of your summer diving into the exciting world where sports, media and business intersect.
