Spring Lonergan Lecture: "God's Glory, in Part, is You"
Monday, February 21, 2022
This talk explores the thought of Bernard Lonergan by way of a consideration of monstrous
bodies–that is, by asking about self-appropriation in the face of the monstrous, when
the "monstrous" is our own face revealed in the mirror of history. The problem is
that our history is a colonial history. This history is staggering violence. Its most
concrete fruit or result is us. This talk explores the problem of colonialism from
within Lonergan's thought, with an eye toward problems Lonergan himself did not conceive.
The new, or renewed, set of Lonerganian insights that result will develop the Lonerganian
tradition's authenticity in a mode of self-transcendence that conceives and re-conceives
historical situations as theological-aesthetic. How might the desire to know under
the pressure of violence break forward into theological-aesthetic possibility?
We will have light refreshments and discussion for those in person. This event will also be available on zoom for those who are not on campus. Please click here to register for the event in advance.
