Mobile Computing Terms and Conditions of Use
As a participant in the Mobile Computing Program, you will be distributed a SHU issued laptop. During the distribution, you will be asked to sign a Laptop License Agreement which verifies receipt of the laptop and peripherals and outlines the terms and conditions of use. You will an agreement when you receive the laptop
The terms and conditions also vary somewhat for specialty and graduate programs. For a copy of those terms and conditions, please contact the Asset Management Office at (973) 313-6181.
Mobile Computing Account Charges and Adjustments
1. Mobile Computing Access Fee
All full-time undergraduate students are required to participate in the Mobile Computing Program and are charged a Mobile Computing Access fee each Fall and Spring semester that they are enrolled at the University. For the current academic year, the Mobile Computing Access fee are $275 laptop fee plus $400 technology fee. These Fees are applied to the bursar account of all full-time undergraduate students. If you elect not to participate, you will still be charged with the program fees. This fee includes the lease of the laptop, the licensing of the software on the laptop, extended warranty for the length of the lease, University e-mail and network accounts, unlimited access to the Internet when connected to the SHU network, as well as all on-site support and training services provided by the University.
2. Mobile Computing Fine
As outlined in the Student Terms and Conditions of the Laptop License Agreement, the students are required to check in their laptop each semester. Laptop check-in takes place over a two week period and is done using an on-line form. Students are notified about check-in via the SHU e-mail system. Students that fail to check in their laptops during the designated period are fined a $1000 Mobile Computing Fine and a hold is placed on their University Bursar account. Once the student successfully completes the check-in for the semester, the fine is reduced to a $50 late fee. The hold on the account will not be lifted until the $50 late fee is paid at Bursar.
3. Laptop Replacement Fee
When a laptop is reported lost or stolen, a laptop replacement fee, up to $1,000 is charged to the student's bursar account. This fee covers the insurance deductible and any increases in insurance premiums due to the high number of stolen or lost laptops.
4. Laptop Buy-out Fee
As per the license agreement, any student whose full time status changes is required to return their laptop. These changes include, but are not limited to withdrawal (official or unofficial), with or without intention to return at a later date, non-registration for a semester with or without intention to return at a later date, leave of absence, transfer or a reduction to part-time status, academic and conduct suspensions and medical leave. Students have until the add-drop period of the semester that they are not enrolled to return laptop before the Laptop Buy-out fee is posted. This fee covers the cost of the laptop and is non-refundable.
5. Appeal Process
The Department of Information Technology has instituted an appeal process for special circumstance that pertain to any of the fees listed above. Laptop Check-in Policy
All students who participate in the Mobile Computing Program are required check-in their laptops once each semester. The process is mandatory.
The purpose of check-in is to ensure that students still have possession of the laptop assigned to them and that our records of serial numbers remain accurate. If your assigned laptop is in repair, you can still check-in online and must do so during the check-in period. Failure to comply with this request will result in a $1000 fine and a hold on your bursar account, which means that you will not be able to pre-register for the following semester. Once you have successfully checked in your laptop, the fine will be reduced to a $50 late fee. The hold on your account will not be lifted until you have paid the balance on your account. All payments must be made to Bursar’s Office.
Details regarding check-in will be e-mailed directly to each student's Seton Hall University e-mail account, so please make sure to read your Seton Hall e-mail on a regular basis.
The Check-in process is completed via an on-line form. To check-in your laptop, click on the link sent in the check-in e-mail. You will be required to log in using your shortname and password. Once in the form, you will be required to enter your SHU ID number and laptop serial number. Once you have completed the form, click on submit to process the check-in. If the check-in was not successful, you will receive a response page advising you to contact the Asset Management Office for assistance.
Ownership at Graduation
Students who have completed all of the necessary coursework to graduate, have successfully completed a degree audit, and are in good standing with Enrollment Services are eligible to own their laptop upon graduation from SHU. Graduating seniors must complete a Transfer of Ownership Form to transfer ownership of the laptop from SHU to you. The laptop will then be yours to keep. You will be responsible for all further maintenance and support of the laptop. SHU will not provide any further support for the laptop. If you have questions regarding your graduation status.
Fifth Year Senior Policy
Students who do not have the necessary credits to graduate in 4 years and will be continuing their studies for two or more additional semesters at SHU are considered fifth year seniors. As participation in the Mobile Computing Program is required for all full-time undergraduate students and ownership of the laptop is contingent upon graduation, fifth year seniors are required to continue to participate in the Mobile Computing Program while completing their studies at SHU.
Continuing Senior License Extension Credit
As a participant in the Mobile Computing Program, you have met one of the following qualifications and will receive a $275.00 credit for each future semester toward your Mobile Computing Fee.
1.Participated in the Mobile Computing Program, paying $275 laptop fee plus $400 technology fee per semester, for at least 4 semesters with my original laptop.
2.Participated in the Mobile Computing Program, paying $275 laptop fee plus $400 technology fee, for at least 8 semesters and have had one laptop upgrade.
As a continuing student taking classes at SHU for the completion of your undergraduate degree you must continue to abide by the terms and conditions outlined in the original Computer License Agreement for the remaining semesters that you are enrolled as an undergraduate student at SHU. You are required to pay full time Technology Fee of $400 per semester for the remaining semesters you are enrolled at SHU. As a part of that fee the Department of Information Technology will continue to service your laptop and provide loaner laptops if necessary. In the case of any physical damages to your laptop you will also be responsible for paying, a maximum deductible of $125, for repair fees.
Upon graduation from the University, you will be eligible to own this laptop but must sign a Transfer of Ownership form.
Laptop Repair Policy
All laptop repairs are done on-site by PC Support Services. Certain charges may apply depending on the nature of the repair. The following guidelines pertain to repairs for laptops issued through the Mobile Computing Program and indicate when charges will apply.
- All repairs must be made through PC Support Services. If circumstances make it difficult to have the laptop repaired at Seton Hall, prior authorization must be obtained from PCSS to use another Lenovo certified repair shop prior to any repairs.
- All warranty repairs are provided at no cost by SHU.
- There will be a charge for any non-warranty, accidental damage to the equipment up to $125.00 per incident. The amount charged per incident will depend on the cost of the parts needed to repair the equipment but will not exceed $125.00 per incident.
- If there is a hardware or software problem with the laptop that the technician is not able to resolve immediately, a loaner laptop will be issued to the customer until this laptop is repaired.
- PC Support Services will only support the University Standard hardware and software. If there is a software issue that requires that the laptop be re-imaged, PC Support Services will only restore academic data. The customer is responsible for restoring any personal software or non-academic data.

Student Stolen Equipment
Students are responsible for the loss or theft of the university issued equipment. A laptop replacement fee will be charged to the student's bursar account for any lost or stolen equipment up to $1000 per incident. A replacement laptop will be issued to the student.
All incidents of loss or theft must be reported to the University Public Safety and Security Office as soon as possible, but no later than 48 hours after the incident. If the laptop is stolen off-campus, the theft must also be reported to the police department in the municipality in which it was stolen. The student is also responsible for notifying the Asset Management Office and for bringing a copy of the incident report to the Asset Management Office. When the student brings the incident report to the Asset Management Office, an appointment will be scheduled for the student to pick up the replacement laptop.
