I have taught at Sarah Lawrence College, Rutgers University and the College of Charleston (SC). I have also worked as a public historian,at the New Jersey Historical Society and more recently, I was a consultant for the American History Workshop in conceptualizing the permanent Slavery exhibition at the new Museum of African-American History and Culture (slated for a 2015 opening) in Washington, DC. I have written for The Nation Magazine and using history interviews, I have produced, written and narrated radio features for WBGO Radio, including "View From the Blue" about the Newark uprisings in 1967, which won an award from the NY Association of Black Journalists.

My first book, "Sacred Mission, Worldly Ambition: Black Christian Nationalism in the Age of Jim Crow" was published in 2008 and is now available from the University of Georgia Press in paperback. My current research focuses on the history of public health and medicine in New York City in the postwar era.
