MHA Accreditation and Competency
The Master of Healthcare Administration degree, offered in both online/hybrid and on-campus delivery formats, is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management (CAHME). This professional organization recognizes programs that have achieved national standards for graduate level healthcare administration education. The MHA program is also a member of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA).
The MHA Program has developed a core set of competencies adapted from a recognized pedagogical model to meet our Seton Hall student needs. These core learning domains and specific competencies guide the MHA program. Individual course specific competencies are available on course syllabi.
MHA Learning Domains and Competency Statements (2017-2020)
DOMAIN 1 - Leadership in the Healthcare Environment: The ability to create and communicate a shared vision for a positive future; inspire trust and motivate others; and to facilitate strategies for successful organizational outcomes by adhering to ethical tenets and exhibiting professional integrity.
- Create and execute a leadership development plan that reflects both personal and professional goals and activities to support lifelong learning and growth.
- Make strategic choices and demonstrate leadership skills that reflect individual development.
- Demonstrate leadership skills that reflect sensitivity, evidence of servant leadership and cultural competence.
DOMAIN 2 - Critical Thinking in a Complex and Competitive Environment: The ability to apply analytical concepts, skills and tools (i.e. the scientific method) that lead to the best options for innovative healthcare management strategies based on a thorough knowledge of health care issues, trends, perspectives and changing environment.
- Apply appropriate concepts, skills, and tools to strategic thinking and planning in the healthcare environment.
- Analyze cause and effect relationships that involve or would enhance critical thinking.
- Assess changing internal and external environments and conditions within a systems perspective to develop innovative healthcare management strategies.
- Apply the scientific method to analysis of data, decision-making and problem solving.
DOMAIN 3 - Management in the Healthcare Environment: The ability to demonstrate management skills of fiscal and ethical stewardship based on a thorough knowledge of the healthcare environment in order to achieve institutional goals.
- Apply general and higher-level management concepts that are relevant to health care organizations.
- Identify the needs of major stakeholders and demonstrate effective techniques for teamwork, conflict management and influencing change.
- Demonstrate the ability to integrate strategic financial thinking and to make managerial decisions.
- Use emerging technology appropriately to inform, collaborate and coordinate with stakeholders.
- Apply organizational behavior concepts that are inclusive and positively impact working relationships.
DOMAIN 4 - Population Health within the Healthcare Environment: The ability to build, manage and implement population health approaches, programs, policies, and services across diverse populations.
- Assess the impact of changes in organizational, legal, regulatory, and political environments for a given health care organization
- Apply population health strategies to strengthen quality improvement and healthcare delivery outcomes.
- Apply appropriate data analytics techniques to inform population health management decisions.
- Demonstrate through role modeling and behavioral actions, cultural competence awareness, sensitivity, and competence.
DOMAIN 5 - Communication: The ability to access and use communication strategies across diverse audiences to inform and influence individual, organization, community, and policy actions.
- Identify and use appropriate communication strategies based on audience characteristics and communication goals.
- Develop, organize, synthesize, and articulate ideas and information in written communication.
- Speak and listen clearly and effectively before individuals and groups, and in formal and informal settings.
DOMAIN 6 - Professionalism and Ethics: The ability to demonstrate a commitment to values and ethical practices at the personal, professional, and organizational level through everyday actions.
