For students interested in healthcare, choosing a future career can be both exciting and overwhelming. While many know they want to help others, they often have limited opportunities to experience the full range of healthcare professions before applying to college. Seton Hall University's Pre-Health Introduction to Health Sciences Summer Immersion Program was designed to change that.

Now in its second year, this unique nine-day summer program welcomed high school students from across the tri-state area and beyond for an unparalleled exploration of healthcare careers. Through a combination of hands-on labs, high-fidelity simulations, professional skill development, interprofessional learning, faculty mentorship and scholarly research, students experienced what it means to be part of today's healthcare workforce.

This is not a traditional summer camp. It is a college-level immersion experience that allows students to step into the role of future healthcare professionals while exploring career paths, developing foundational skills and gaining confidence in their future educational goals.

One Program. Six Healthcare Professions
What makes Seton Hall's program truly distinctive is the opportunity for students to explore multiple healthcare professions within a single experience. Throughout the program, students worked directly with faculty from Nursing, Speech-Language Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies, and Athletic Training. The addition of Nursing this year expanded opportunities for students to explore one of the nation's most in-demand professions while further strengthening the program's interprofessional focus.

Rather than spending a week focused on one discipline, students experienced the unique contributions of six professions and learned how they work together to improve patient outcomes. For many participants, the experience confirmed a career choice they were already considering. For others, it introduced professions they had never previously explored and opened doors to new possibilities.

Students repeatedly shared that one of the most valuable aspects of the program was the ability to compare professions side-by-side and gain a clearer understanding of where their interests, strengths, and passions align. Many highlighted the opportunity to explore a variety of healthcare professions in one setting. As one participant shared, "My favorite part about the program was getting experience and background on all different healthcare professions." Another student noted that they especially valued "learning about various different healthcare professions and engaging in hands-on experiences to deepen my understanding of the profession."

Learning Healthcare by Doing
The hallmark of the program is immersive, experiential learning. Students practiced healthcare skills with Seton Hall faculty experts, worked through patient scenarios, explored clinical technologies and engaged in realistic simulations that mirrored situations healthcare providers encounter every day.

From patient assessments and therapeutic interventions to mobility training, communication strategies, rehabilitation techniques, emergency response activities and nursing care experiences, students were actively engaged in the learning process.

Each activity was carefully designed to move beyond observation and place students at the center of the experience. By doing rather than simply watching, participants gained a deeper understanding of healthcare careers and the critical thinking required to succeed within them.

Students consistently cited the experiential nature of the program as one of its greatest strengths. One participant shared, "I love doing hands-on activities and felt that the simulations offered more insight for myself and collaboration with others." Their feedback reflected the program's emphasis on active learning and real-world application of healthcare concepts.

Understanding the Power of Team-Based Care
A defining and highly unique feature of the program is its focus on interprofessional education. Healthcare today is not delivered by a single provider. It depends on teams of professionals working collaboratively to address patient needs. Throughout the immersion experience, students learned how nurses, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, physician assistants and athletic trainers each bring unique expertise to patient care.

Students experienced firsthand how communication, teamwork and collaboration contribute to better healthcare outcomes. This exposure not only broadened their understanding of the healthcare system but also reflected the team-oriented approach they will encounter in healthcare education and clinical practice.

The collaborative environment extended beyond clinical learning. As one student explained, "My favorite part of this program was definitely all the hands-on activities we experienced. I loved how group oriented each activity was and how it opened new friendships that I hope to hold in the future." The opportunity to connect with peers who shared similar interests helped foster both professional growth and personal connections throughout the program.
Few pre-college healthcare programs provide students with this type of authentic interprofessional experience.

Becoming Scholars and Future Healthcare Leaders
The program culminated in collaborative capstone research presentations that challenged students to integrate everything they learned throughout the nine-day experience. Working in teams, students investigated healthcare topics through an interdisciplinary lens, incorporating knowledge gained from multiple professions. They explored evidence-based practices, analyzed healthcare challenges, and presented their findings to faculty and peers.

The capstone experience elevated students from participants to scholars. It strengthened their research, communication, presentation, and critical-thinking skills while reinforcing the importance of collaborative problem-solving in healthcare. The projects served as a powerful demonstration of how much students had learned in a short period of time and highlighted their growth as future healthcare professionals.

A Head Start on College and Healthcare Careers
Beyond career exploration, students experienced life as a health sciences student at Seton Hall University. Participants earned college credit, worked with faculty mentors, utilized university facilities and engaged in academic experiences that mirror those found in undergraduate health sciences programs.

Equally important, students developed skills essential to success in healthcare and higher education, including communication, leadership, professionalism, cultural humility, teamwork, resilience and adaptability.

They left with far more than knowledge about healthcare careers. They left with experiences, confidence, professional skills and a clearer vision of their future.
