Purpose of Workshop

This program will inform participants of the pathophysiology of a concussion and the role of the oculomotor exam in diagnosis and rehabilitation. Information on the interpretation of and different assessment techniques for cranial nerves 3, 4 and 6; rehabilitation options for oculomotor deficits; and sample gradual return-to-learn and return-to-play protocols will be discussed.

  • To understand the definition of concussion
  • To evaluate the signs and symptoms of concussion
  • To evaluate and interpret the vestibular oculomotor exam
  • To apply the return-to-learn plan
  • To design and apply the variety of school modifications that may be required following a concussion
  • To design and apply return-to-play guidelines

Presenter Qualifications

Arlene Goodman

Arlene Goodman, MD, graduated from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 2004 and completed a fellowship in pediatric sports medicine at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Dr. Goodman is a board certified pediatrician and sports medicine specialist who worked at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and now heads the Sports Medicine Program at St. Peter's University Hospital in Somerset, New Jersey.

Her current area of research involves the role of the oculomotor assessment and rehabilitation in concussions. She serves on the Sports Concussion Committee of the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey.  As published in South Jersey magazine, Dr. Goodman has been recognized by her peers as a sports medicine "Top Doc for Kids in South Jersey." Dr. Goodman is part of St. Peter's Physician Associates.
