Henry Amoroso, J. D., has been chosen as State Monitor at NJCU

Esteemed Professor Henry Amoroso was chosen as State Monitor at NJCU to benefit students and safeguard the public interest.  

Henry J. Amoroso, J.D., highly esteemed associate professor of legal studies at the Stillman School of Business, who has had a longstanding relationship with Seton Hall, has been chosen to serve as the State Monitor at New Jersey City University (NJCU). Brian K. Bridges, Ph.D., New Jersey Secretary of Higher Education, announced his appointment on August 30, 2023. 

“We have a responsibility to protect the significant higher education investments made by students, their families, and the State,” said Secretary Bridges in making the announcement. “With the appointment of Mr. Amoroso, NJCU unquestionably gains a seasoned expert whose acumen and values will help realize positive transformation and future solvency for the university. Equally, by taking this first step under the new statutory authority vested in my office, we become better fiscal stewards of the investment made in our institutions by thousands of students seeking access to an affordable, high-quality postsecondary education.”  

Amoroso, chair of the Department of Economics and Legal Studies, also serves as the inaugural Director of the Micah Institute for Business Ethics and Economic Justice, which seeks to engage and support the development of business school faculty and assist them with incorporating consideration of ethical behaviors and decision making into the curricula of business school courses, all within the context of the Catholic Social Tradition and the Catholic mission of Seton Hall

With respect to his selection, Amoroso said, “I am deeply grateful to be entrusted with this role and to leverage my diverse organizational expertise to secure a stronger financial and operational footing for NJCU. He added, “By repairing the financial harm caused by bad actors, we stand to restore confidence in the education offered and, more importantly, ensure the institution can fulfill its mission to provide high-quality education to its current students and remain a credit to the wider community.”  

Amoroso teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the legal environment of business, ethics and public policy. Innovations he has introduced into his courses, including establishing “corporate boards” of outside professionals to evaluate student-client work. Incorporated current issues into his classes to demonstrate to students the relevance of their work, in his “Law Ethics and Public Policy” course, students’ exam questions focused on the ethics of four environmental issues in the context of Hurricane Sandy and the corresponding Jersey Shore restoration. He regularly prepares unique ethics-oriented case studies for his “Social Responsibility” course, most recently including the Ford Motor Company, GE, and Campbell Soup. 
 
His research centers on the contributions of business experience to the scholarship and practice of teaching, as well as the incorporation of the Catholic Social Tradition into business pedagogy. The co-author of two books, the most recent, Law, Business and Regulation: A Managerial Perspective. He co-authored the acclaimed textbook The Legal Environment of Business—which has appeared in outlets such as the Campbell Law Review, the Journal of the Partners in Learning, Business and Public Affairs, the International Journal of Learning and Development, and the Federation of Insurance and Corporate Counsel. 

Amoroso has served as a strategic advisor to government entities, businesses, and nonprofits, including on more than 20 boards and advisory committees. As a top business executive, he has decades of experience in diverse large-scale strategic planning and facilitating successful million- and billion-dollar transition and turnaround efforts.
