The Biology Honors Program provides an advanced academic pathway for highly motivated
undergraduate students who demonstrate exceptional academic performance and a strong
interest in pursuing graduate studies or research intensive careers in the biological
sciences. This program allows students to engage in sustained, faculty mentored research
that culminates in the completion and presentation of an original scholarly project.
Students who successfully complete all requirements will earn the Biology Honors Bachelor
of Science degree.
Program Rationale, Goals and Objectives
The Biology Honors Program is designed to enrich the undergraduate experience by integrating advanced research training, scientific inquiry, and professional development. Through close mentorship with a faculty advisor, students develop the skills necessary to design, conduct, analyze and communicate independent biological research.
Program Goals
-
Provide students with the opportunity to complete a long term, faculty mentored research project.
-
Strengthen student preparation for graduate programs (M.S., Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D.) and research focused careers.
-
Cultivate advanced competencies in experimental design, data analysis, scientific writing, and oral communication.
-
Promote scholarly independence and professional readiness through structured mentorship and research engagement.
Program Objectives
Students completing the Biology Honors Program will be able to:
-
Formulate a research question grounded in biological theory and current literature.
-
Design and execute a rigorous experimental or analytical research plan.
-
Apply appropriate quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze biological data.
-
Communicate scientific findings effectively through written and oral formats.
-
Demonstrate professionalism, ethical research conduct and scientific integrity.
Program Structure
The Biology Honors Program is designed for students who are academically prepared to undertake a rigorous, long term research experience. Due to the demanding nature of the coursework and independent research, applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria and follow a structured application process to ensure timely progress toward graduation.

Eligibility Requirements
To apply to the Biology Honors Program, students must:
-
Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.395, consistent with the University’s requirement for graduating with honors.
-
Earn a grade of B or higher in Genetics (BIOL 2221/2222).
-
Officially declare Biology Honors as their major.
These requirements ensure that students possess the academic foundation necessary to successfully complete an extended research project under faculty mentorship.
Application Timeline and Process
Students should submit their application to the Director of the Biology Honors Program by the end of their sophomore year to remain on track for graduation. Applications are accepted twice per year:
-
Fall deadline: September 15
-
Spring deadline: February 15
Before applying, students must secure a faculty advisor who will supervise their honors research project. Applications will be evaluated by the Director—along with faculty input when appropriate—based on the student’s GPA, the strength of the letter of intent, and the student’s ability to complete the program requirements within the expected timeframe.
Program Coordination
The Biology Honors Program is distinct from, but may be pursued concurrently with, the University Honors Program. Students interested in exploring both pathways are encouraged to consult with the program leadership to determine the best fit for their academic and professional goals.
