At Seton Hall, we know that understanding personal finance is critical to college success and life after graduation. That’s why we created the Financial Literacy Academy, which is specifically designed to help college students build real-world money skills.
Whether you’re figuring out student loans, setting up your first budget, or planning for life after college, this academy gives you the tools to make smart, confident financial decisions.

Why Financial Literacy Matters for College Students

From paying for college to saving for your first apartment or job, learning how to manage your money now sets you up for long-term success. The Financial Literacy Academy teaches you how to:

  • Understand and manage student loans

  • Create a budget that works for college life

What You’ll Learn

Basic Certification (Learn the Essentials)

Students will receive original content for completion at their own pace.

Topics include:

 Budgeting Made Easy
Learn how to track spending, build a realistic budget and set achievable savings goals
 Credit and Debt Management
Understand credit scores, credit cards and responsible borrowing
 Student Loans 101
Make sense of your loan terms and learn strategies for repayment
 Investing Basics
Get introduced to stocks, mutual funds and compound interest
 Taxes and Paychecks
Decode your first paycheck and prepare for tax season
 Life After College
From retirement accounts to insurance, we help you prepare for what’s next

Intermediate Certification (Build on What You Know)

Students will complete relevant coursework to augment their basic financial literacy knowledge.

Courses include:

 Personal Money Management
100% online, self-paced course focusing on the ABCs of personal money management, with emphasis on postgraduation credit and debt decisions. Topics include paychecks, credit cards, school loans, mortgages, stock investing, and income taxes. Short video clips with required light reading, including 10 online self-tests and one online final examination.
 Speaking and Listening in a Digital and Global Age
This course explores human communication with the self and others in interpersonal, small group, and public speaking settings across digital, in-person, and global contexts. Special emphasis is on students’ developing communication, cultural, digital, and listening competencies through exploring the role that verbal and nonverbal messages play in personal and professional relations.

Advanced Certification (Apply Your Skills)

Dedicated curriculum at the University

Vita Tax Lab

Participate in Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

Minimum of 20 hours (in line with the existing MBA Service Project/Tax Lab)
