Catholic Studies Presents the Fourth Annual Monsignor James Cafone S.T.D. Memorial Lecture
Wednesday, January 31, 2018
The late Msgr. Cafone speaking with students.
The Program of Catholic Studies is pleased to invite you to the Fourth Annual Monsignor James Cafone S.T.D. Memorial Lecture, featuring Reverend Daniel Utrecht, C.O., Ph.D. The lecture is titled, "A Bishop Who Stood Against Hitler and his Lessons for Today" and will be presented on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, 3 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge of the University Center.
The lecture will highlight Blessed Clemens August von Galen who was the first bishop named in Germany after Adolf Hitler took power. He became known as the Lion of Münster because of his outspoken criticism of the Nazis. In 1941, at the height of Germany's success in World War II, he predicted that unless the country put an end to the injustice of the Gestapo, no amount of heroism on the battlefield would prevent the country from collapsing into ruin. His sermons against the Gestapo and the killing of the handicapped were secretly copied and distributed all over Germany, as well as being dropped in huge numbers from British airplanes. He survived the war and was made a Cardinal in early 1946, but died of a appendicitis attack shortly after returning to Germany from Rome.
Fr. Utrecht's lecture will present some highlights of Bishop Von Galen's life and his sermons, and suggest some lessons he has for us today.
This lecture is co-sponsored by the Center for Catholic Studies, University Core and the Department of Religion.
Rev. Daniel Utrecht, C.O., Ph.D.
