Education Specialist (Ed.S.)

Ed.S. Professional Counseling

* To be eligible for admission, interested students must first complete Seton Hall University’s M.A. in Counseling. 

The Ed.S. in Professional Counseling program is offered entirely online and ideal for students who desire to prepare for a career as a professional mental health counselor.  This degree complements the College’s M.A. in Counseling online program and provides students with skills and models of intervention grounded in theory. 

The Program

The Ed.S in Professional Counseling (Online) consists of an additional 12 credits of advanced-level practice and knowledge courses beyond the 48-credit M.A. in Counseling. The Professional Counseling program strives for academic excellence and meets the requirements for licensure as a professional counselor in the state of New Jersey and most other states in the country. 

While the programs provide the necessary education and experience for licensure as a professional counselor in New Jersey and most other states, if students choose to pursue it, some states have specific requirements of which students should be aware. All incoming students are required to review their state of origin or preferred state regulations prior to enrollment, and do so again in their first semester to outline additional requirements for licensure.

Admissions Requirements 

  • Completion of Seton Hall M.A. in Counseling
  • Online application 
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended 
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation, including at least one from a professional colleague who can attest to the candidate’s ability to interact with others, fit with the counseling profession, and capacity for graduate study 
  • Personal statement, outlining a description of related work experience, qualifications, and academic and professional goals 
  • Resume or C.V. 
  • Interview with the Admissions Committee 

Application Deadline

The program accepts applications throughout the year and operates on a rolling admissions basis.  

Admissions Criteria and Prerequisites 

  • We do not require any prerequisite courses nor prior counseling experience 
  • Undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (or equivalent) preferred 

Faculty

The faculty in the College of Human Development, Culture, and Media are expert researchers and practitioners in teacher and leader preparation as well as professional psychology and family therapy. Many are actively engaged with schools and community agencies, modeling best practices to their students in the university classroom and in the field. Collaboration within departments and across is encouraged with the recognition that supporting and improving the lives of children, families and communities is a complex process.
