Public Safety and Security (PSS) recently received the 2023 Division of Student Services Outstanding Mission Award. The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) also received this award. On April 15, Vice President Monica Burnette, Ph.D., interviewed Mr. Sergio Oliva, associate vice president and director of Public Safety & Security, on this recognition.

A Seton Hall alumnus with an M.A. in Police Studies, Mr. Oliva has served Seton Hall for 22 years, overseeing the daily operations of Public Safety & Security, Campus ID, and Parking Services. Mr. Oliva also supervises fire safety systems and the Office of Emergency Management, ensuring all policies and procedures are consistent with the University mission.

What are three words to describe the mission of Public Safety & Security?

Safety, security and community.

What is the most rewarding aspect of working in Public Safety & Security?

Ensuring the safety and well-being of our community members is one of the most fulfilling parts of our work. Building positive relationships with the community and contributing to a sense of security is deeply rewarding. Overall, our staff feels being part of a team dedicated to maintaining a secure environment for everyone brings immense satisfaction.

Significance of department recognition:

Recognition for our department affirms our unwavering commitment to excellence in safety and security---validating our team members' hard work and dedication. Additionally, the acknowledgment through awards is a motivational force, inspiring our team to continuously improve services and strive for excellence in fulfilling our mission.

Future initiatives in our department:

Our department is proactively implementing advanced security measures to stay ahead of evolving threats, including expanding camera surveillance and incorporating LPR technology. Simultaneously, we are directing our efforts toward enhancing community engagement programs to foster stronger connections within the community. A key priority for future initiatives is strengthening our emergency response plan and training protocols to ensure a robust and effective response to unforeseen circumstances.

We recently partnered with SGA to redesign the look of the SHUFLY and SafeRide vehicles, now called the Seton Hall Shuttle. Students can vote on their favorite design by clicking here. We value student feedback and look forward to the new look! Voting ends on April 26.
