Chemistry seminar LogoThe Department of Chemistry Rose Mercadante Seminar Series is pleased to present a seminar entitled "Innovating for the Consumer Products Industry" by Dr. Kelly George of L'Oreal USA Innovation and Research.

The seminar will be held in the Science and Technology Center, Helen Lerner Amphitheater, on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at 5:45 PM.

The Consumer Products Industry offers a wide range of research opportunities, in fields such as chemistry, material science, biology, engineering, and computer science. This presentation will shed light on the exciting research areas of opportunity within the Consumer Products industry and provide examples of how cutting edge science is delivering new, better & different benefits to consumers in the marketplace. The goal of this presentation is to educate both students and faculty on the career & research opportunities in this industry and suggest how your early research programs may be applicable for future innovations in Consumer Products.

Kelly M. George Ph.D.Kelly M. George, Ph.D. is a Principal Scientist at L'Oreal USA Research & Innovation, where she currently leads Open Research/Innovation projects in Advanced Research. She also spent 3 years working in Skincare developing novel formulations for the Beauty Device Division for several Clarisonic product launches.

Dr. George joined L'Oreal in 2012 following four years at Hoffman-La Roche, where she managed teams and Discovery (Medicinal) Chemistry projects as a Section Head and Lead Chemist for Oncology and Diabetes programs. Prior to Roche, she worked as a Scientist for Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati, OH.

Dr. George graduated from Washington & Jefferson College with a B.A. in Chemistry and English. She completed her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in the labs of Prof. Gary Molander, where she completed the total synthesis of Isoschizandrin for her graduate thesis. She was awarded the Bristol-Myers Squibb Graduate Fellowship and was one of five women recognized as a L'Oreal USA For Women in Science Fellow.

Dr. George has worked in both the pharmaceutical and consumer product development sectors. She is an accomplished scientific leader with a proven track record for leading teams, championing innovative collaborations, advancing projects and delivering winning products to the marketplace. Dr. George was recognized by the ACS Division of Organic Chemistry as a 2014 Young Investigator, named one of the "50 Talks to Watch" by C&EN magazine and received the 2014 Young Alumni Award from Washington & Jefferson College.

Dr. George serves on the ACS Women Chemists Committee (WCC) and the Edison Biotech Institute Board of Directors at Ohio University. She is passionate about mentoring, attracting, promoting and retaining women and minorities in the chemical sciences, and was a featured panelist at the 2014 United Nations Women's National Committee.
