Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the use of technology to perform tasks that typically
require human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, understanding
natural language, recognizing patterns, and making decisions. Generative AI is a subset
of artificial intelligence that focuses on the creation of new content— including
text, images, video and computer code — by identifying patterns in large data sets
and other knowledge sources, then generating content autonomously, imitating cognitive
functions, human creativity and imagination.

AI and the Future of Teaching and Learning
From virtual assistants, like Siri and Alexa, to personalized content recommendations on streaming platforms, AI is already integrated into many of the tools we use in our everyday life. Integrating AI into higher education is an inevitability. As the applications of generative AI advance, its impact on teaching and learning methodologies cannot be ignored. Faculty are encouraged to thoughtfully engage with GenAI tools to establish expectations around the use of AI in the classroom. The extent to which AI is used or prohibited will vary by discipline and teaching philosophy.
