PIPE Presents a Duo of Irish Events

Overlooking cliffs in Ireland with a rainbow in the distance. After a pandemic-induced period of dormancy, Pirates of Irish Persuasion & Extraction (PIPE), Seton Hall's student organization celebrating Irish culture, is back. Following a semester of recruitment efforts, PIPE has kicked off its next phase with several events this semester. PIPE invites students, faculty, staff, administrators, and members of the wider community to attend two upcoming events: a presentation on artifacts from Irish history (Thursday, April 28) and an Irish language workshop (Friday, April 29). The events are included in Seton Hall's Petersheim Academic Exposition programming.

"Taking place just days after the 106th anniversary of the start of the Easter Rising in Ireland, which heralded Ireland's rebirth as a nation, these two spring events for PIPE signal a strong start to the next phase of PIPE's activity," said Eilish R. Harrington, PIPE Advisor and the Institutional Planning and Communications Analyst at Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology. "PIPE was reactivated as a student organization in December, and the club has a strong student base. The club leaders are excited to be able to present high-quality programming for the university community."

Delivering an illustrated lecture titled "Siombailí na hÉireann: Examples of Essential and Enduring Symbols in Irish History," Alan B. Delozier, D.Litt., University Archivist and Adjunct Associate Professor of Catholic Studies, as well as PIPE Advisor, will share some treasures from the University's Irish archival collections, showing the evolution and constancy of the portrayal in print of particular symbols in Irish history. This event will take place on Thursday, April 28, at 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Jubilee Hall, Room 132.

On the following day, Regina Femminella, a New Jersey native and a language and social science educator with 31 years of teaching experience, will present an introductory Irish language workshop. Ms. Femminella is an advocate for heritage and less-commonly-taught languages, with a particular interest in Irish. Appropriate for those who would like to learn to speak a few words in Irish and those who are interested in learning about the history of the Irish language, this event will take place on Friday, April 29, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Jubilee Hall, Room 111.

These events follow PIPE's co-sponsorship with the Center for Faculty Development of a Diversity Film Series event featuring Irish short films and commentary by some of Seton Hall's faculty experts on Irish culture. PIPE has also participated in University-wide student outreach events and most recently, in Multicultural Fairytale Night, sponsored by the German Club.

"We're so happy that we've gotten PIPE back up and running this year," said Trevor Conroy, PIPE President. "We've taken advantage of many opportunities to be involved in campus-wide events, and we're excited to welcome members of the University community and the wider community to these two April events that celebrate Irish culture. There's a lot of interest in Irish culture at Seton Hall, and we are grateful to Dr. Delozier and Ms. Femminella for sharing their expertise with us."
