My present position at SHU is, in part, a repayment for the ways in which the University has fostered my own interests in mathematical techniques to explore real-world questions, including the sport of baseball. After my undergraduate studies in mathematics and computer science, I worked on simulations of networks under distributed control algorithms for the US Army and on scheduling systems using branch-and-bound linear optimization for NYC Transit. I also took some time to complete the humanities work I started as an early member of SHU's Humanities Honors Program, as well as to study the issues of managing human interactions with the natural world to minimize damage and maximize diversity.

My reconnection with SHU started with some assistance that I gave to offerings of a Winter intersession course on Sabermetrics, the statistical study of baseball, created by Prof. John T. Saccoman and Fr. Gabe Costa, recognized experts in this new field. Regular contact with Prof. Saccoman led to an offer to teach the Finite Math course for business students, and the satisfaction in seeing students gain their own firm understanding and competency in applying mathematics to their own interests has brought me full-time to the University community.
