International Student Spotlight on Alvaro Pozo

Students WalkingThis edition of student spotlight introduces Mr. Alvaro Pozo, a full-time student attending classes in the ESL@SetonHall intensive English program on campus. Alvaro joins us from Ecuador and has been studying with the ESL@SetonHall program for one semester now. Alvaro responded by email to a series of interview questions. Here is his story.

What were you doing in your home country of Ecuador prior to joining the ESL program at Seton Hall University?
I was studying medicine in my country before I joined the ESLP program at Seton Hall. When I was in my country, I felt that the major was not for me so I decided to come to the US in order to learn English.

What led you to choose Seton Hall's ESL intensive English program?
The reason is because my plan is to enter an aviation school. But for now, first is the English so that's why I decided to join an ESL program and Seton Hall was my first choice.

What have you been learning in the classes? Has there been a favorite assignment?
I have and am still learning so much vocabulary, idioms, phrasal verbs, pronunciation, and more. I have been able to develop my listening, speaking reading and writing skills always with the help of the teacher. I really feel that my English is going in a good way.

What are your plans for the summer?
My plan for this summer is to follow my goal of Learning English Fluency. That's why I will register for the summer's classes. Other goals I have are to stay in shape and to be social.

What are you future plans after completing the ESL@SetonHall program?
My future plan after the ESLP program is to begin with my major and to enjoy my time here in the United States.

We in the ESL@SetonHall program thank Alvaro for being a part of our learning community. As Alvaro continues forward in his academic goal to join an aviation school, he will always have our support and advocacy here at Seton Hall University.

The academic-based ESL@SetonHall intensive English program prepares individuals for success in postsecondary undergraduate and graduate programs in the United States. During morning coursework, students study reading, writing, listening, and speaking using academic materials. During afternoon coursework, students select from a range of elective classes including TOEFL Preparation, Digital Media Publishing, Pronunciation Skills, among others.
