Heart of the University, Faculty Retreat Series Spring 2022

The Heart of the University Retreat Series gives faculty and administrators of all faiths the opportunity for input and guided reflection. The series is co-sponsored by the Office of Mission and Ministry, and the Center for Vocation and Servant Leadership.
The fourth retreat, given by Dr. Anthony Haynor on the theme of Development and Education: Why Intellectual Growth Requires Spiritual Transformation, will be held on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, from 9 to 11 a.m. via Microsoft Teams.
This retreat will affirm, as a central mission of the university, the fostering of the intellectual development of students and faculty alike. A key question to be addressed is whether the process of intellectual discovery and verification—as well as the moral and practical judgments that flow from our working theories—can be carried out fruitfully without spiritual enlightenment. The retreat will explore how the spiritual virtues of humility, courage, and compassion, as expressions of redemptive, transcendent love, can empower us in confronting biased thinking, thus paving the way for authentic intellectual conversion.
Anthony L. Haynor, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work and Criminal Justice. He is a GEM Fellow in the PRAXIS Program.
