A Diplomacy Alumnus Success Story

Meet an alumnus! Franklin Shobe graduated with his Master of Arts in Diplomacy and International Relations degree in May 2023, and is now employed as a program assistant at the Eurasia Foundation’s Education and Leadership Exchange division. During his time at Seton Hall, he held several jobs, including both graduate assistant and research assistant positions, participated in organizations such as the International Law Society, and was awarded an Academic Excellence Award for highest grade point average in his graduating class. Franklin is an example of the excellent students and alumni that the Seton Hall School of Diplomacy and International Relations fosters. 

As a graduate student, Franklin specialized in International Law and Human Rights, and International Economics and Development. The knowledge he gained from these areas laid a foundation for his current position as a program assistant at the Eurasia Foundation. Franklin plays a pivotal role in supporting programs which foster exchanges between American and Eurasian non-profit professionals and academics. His day-to-day responsibilities are essential to creating the smooth-flowing operation which the Eurasia Foundation maintains to ensure the success of their projects. From conducting meticulous research, to ensuring the accuracy of project materials through thorough proofreading, managing crucial aspects of data organization, and handling invoices, Franklin supports the mission of the Eurasia Foundation. 

While studying for his M.A., Franklin interned with the International Rescue Committee which confirmed his decision to work in the non-profit sector. This internship and an encounter with representatives from the Eurasia Foundation while undertaking an intensive summer Russian course at Middlebury College, provided him with invaluable insights into the organization's mission and vision, leading him to his current role.

Reflecting on his educational journey, Franklin emphasizes the significance that the School of Diplomacy had on his success. "The biggest thing I learned while studying at the School of Diplomacy was the importance of being proactive while completing my tasks and integrating into the organization." From internships, to classes, to networking, Franklin was able to balance it all. His advice for current students is, "Work hard, expect the unexpected, and seek out new opportunities." He emphasizes the importance of diligence in a competitive field, urging diplomacy students to go above and beyond to achieve success. He additionally encourages students to develop their language capabilities and focus on learning new ones, as he found his proficiency in Russian made him more employable and deepened his understanding of global affairs.

As he continues to make strides in his career, Franklin serves as an inspiration to future diplomats and non-profit leaders currently studying at the School of Diplomacy, proving that with perseverance and passion, anything is possible in the realm of international relations.
