Stillman School of Business Student Jessica Moran Shares Her Internship Experience

Internships provide college students with vital hands-on experiences within the field of their choice before graduating.

Jessica Moran, a senior accounting major, and a Buccino Scholar, interned as an audit associate at KPMG, one of the "Big Four" accounting firms, last summer. Her responsibilities included conducting audits, preparing reports summarizing audit findings, and maintaining financial documents.

Moran said that she gained both interpersonal and technical skills from her internship.

"I got to interact with a wide range of audit professionals, which helped me with my networking and communication skills," Moran said. "I also learned a great deal of collaboration, technical accounting skills, and knowledge in working with clients across three different industries."

She said that the Career Center’s services and events were crucial in helping her land her internship.

"They helped me with my resume, and I was able to go to the Spring and Fall Career Fairs and meet a recruiter one-on-one," Moran said. "That really got my resume looked at, leading to the interview process, and ultimately my acceptance. I recommend leveraging all the opportunities early on and securing an internship as soon as possible."

Moran stressed the importance of internships for true real-world experience.

"In my mind, an internship is the only way to get practical experience of applying what you learn in the textbooks and the classroom in the real world," she said.

Students should visit Compass to schedule an appointment with their career advisors to discuss internships. They should also utilize Handshake to discover internship opportunities.
