Accomplished MLB player, MLB analyst, entrepreneur and owner Alex Rodriguez headlines the latest Sports Media Speaker Series event hosted by the Center for Sports Media within the College of Communication and the Arts. "Alex Rodriguez: Beyond Baseball" will be held on April 4 and for the main event Rodriguez will be joined on stage with Bob Ley '76 and Bardia Shah-Rais '95. The trio will lead a wide-ranging conversation to learn more about the industry and how Rodriguez parlayed an outstanding career on the diamond into media, entrepreneurship, and professional sports team ownership.
The event will bring together experienced individuals in broadcasting, including Ley's decades of award-winning programming at ESPN and Shah-Rais' leadership as Vice President of Production at Fox Sports. Combined, the trio has received dozens of Sports Emmys with their varied involvement at ESPN and Fox. This event will also mark the first premier event since the launch of the Center for Sports Media in October 2021.
"It was important for us to kick off the launch of the Center for Sports Media on the right foot," stated B.J. Schecter, Professional-in-Residence in Communication and the Arts and former Sports Illustrated Executive Editor. "The past five years we worked diligently to bring high profile media members for students, and we're excited to have Alex Rodriguez as the latest professional to speak with our community."
Along with the headlined event, Rodriguez is anticipated to host small group sessions with current students. Small breakout sessions are planned to include engaging opportunities for selected students from the College of Communication and the Arts and student-athletes about the interplay with media from the vantage point of an athlete and a media personality. In addition, students from Pirate Sports Network will learn about media perspectives, while invited students from the Stillman School of Business and Buccino Leadership cohorts can discuss entrepreneurship and Rodriguez's business ventures.
"The Center for Sports Media is built on interdisciplinary studies, and this is the perfect event to showcase that," Schecter noted. "It took the help not only of Communication and the Arts, but also University Advancement, the Stillman School of Business, University Relations and other campus partners to make this happen. Rodriguez's vast experience in the media and as a business executive, so this event underscores how varied entities work together."
Free and open to the student community, "Alex Rodriguez: Beyond Baseball" is scheduled for Monday, April 4 in Bethany Hall on the South Orange, New Jersey campus. Seating is at capacity and registration is now closed. Pirate Sports Network (PSN), which broadcasts many of the University's athletic events, is offering a livestream of the event, beginning at 1 p.m. (EST).
