About the President

Joseph E. Nyre, Ph.D. in front of Bayley HallPresident Nyre is a first-generation college graduate of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse; he helped pay for his college education by first serving in the U.S. Navy. He then earned an M.A. from the University of Missouri and an Ed.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. President Nyre followed those degrees with postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School.

He assumed the presidency of Seton Hall after serving for eight years as president of Iona College, a Roman Catholic institution in New Rochelle, New York.

President Nyre often discusses the "power of the place to change destinations and transform lives" and the important role played by every person in this pursuit.

A student-focused servant leader, President Nyre has a demonstrated record of elevating institutions by engaging students, faculty and staff in shared visioning, planning, execution and governance. This orientation has produced a history of building cultures centered on student engagement and success, increasing college affordability and actively involving students in institutional governance.

President Nyre embraces Seton Hall's focus on "what great minds can do." He believes great minds should engage in the great conversations, challenges and debates of our time. Concurrently, President Nyre underscores the importance of investing in recruiting, retaining and developing faculty and staff who "inspire students to reach beyond their grasp."

Mindful of the changing higher education landscape, President Nyre has substantial experience in leading high-performing teams to reduce tuition dependency, to strengthen institutional fiscal health, to fundraise for key institutional initiatives and to introduce innovative academic programs. Collectively, his teams achieved record levels of fundraising (tripling his prior institution's endowment in less than eight years), revamped the core curriculum, introduced a cross-institution Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, advanced record levels of student scholarships and transformed the campus by constructing or renovating numerous buildings.

Prior to serving as president of Iona, he was president and CEO of the Hope Institute, a nonprofit collaborative training, research, policy and direct service provider focused on improving the system of care for children on the Autism spectrum and their families. He has served as a faculty member at several institutions, including Baylor University, Harvard Medical School and the University of Illinois-Chicago School of Medicine. President Nyre has practiced as a psychologist in academic, clinical and private practice settings. His research in developmental psychopathology and systems of care has garnered more than $60 million in external funding.

President Nyre is a devout Catholic who credits his experiences in St. Jude Parish and Beloit Catholic High School in Beloit, Wisconsin, with formulating his faith and developing his intellectual curiosity. He is known to play a mean guitar, to play a fair game of golf and to be an avid basketball fan. President Nyre and his wife, the former Kelli McIntyre, have four children: Evelyn, Charlie, Henry and Hadley.
