Veterans Day Message from President Nyre

“True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” — Arthur Ashe

Dear Setonians,

As we approach Veterans Day, please join me in thanking all who served with pride and distinction as members of the United States Armed Forces.

Veterans are vital members of our community. They are professors, priests, employees, parents, friends and students. We see them every day, yet we rarely hear their stories or understand how much they sacrificed on our behalf.

They are the reasons our society has the power to shape its own destiny. They are the caretakers and guarantors of the freedoms we enjoy every day. Whether in war or peace, on active duty or in the reserves, every veteran deserves our gratitude.

We extend our thanks on this important day. But how does our community show its appreciation throughout the year?

Most notably, the University is proud to be part of the federal Yellow Ribbon Program. Dozens of former soldiers who are now Seton Hall students — as well as scores of alumni — have relied on this program to improve their lives.

There are many examples of Setonians using the power of their great minds to serve our veterans. Among other actions:

  • Faculty and student research has examined the causes of homelessness among veterans.
  • Nursing students have trained in the specific techniques of caring for veterans.
  • The law school sponsors a Student Veterans Association and provides legal services to former soldiers.
  • Men’s Basketball will host Veterans Appreciation Night on Wednesday, November 10 against Fairleigh Dickinson.
  • And our alumni are among the state’s staunchest advocates for veterans’ rights.

As a University community, we rightly care for our fellow citizens who have engaged in the highest level of public service. And though we can never repay them, I am proud of Seton Hall’s historic and continuing support of our former soldiers.

This Thursday — and every day — let us salute our veterans who have devoted themselves to ensuring our liberty and advancing the common good.

Sincerely,

Joseph E. Nyre, Ph.D.

President
