A Veterans Day Message from President Nyre

"Let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores to preserve our heritage of freedom. And let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so their efforts shall not have been in vain." — President Dwight D. Eisenhower, October 8, 1954

On Veterans Day, we gratefully acknowledge the men and women who wore the military uniform of the United States. They rightly deserve our appreciation for their selfless service and for ensuring American freedom.

As President Eisenhower noted when he established the holiday, thanking our former soldiers is worthwhile — but ultimately insufficient. The president believed ordinary citizens must use the freedom won by veterans to advance peace and justice at home and abroad.

Today, in addition to recognizing family members, friends, professors, students, colleagues and members of the priest community who served, we must ask ourselves:

How can we use our freedom to elevate the nation and world? More than anything else, our response to that question will determine how this American generation will be remembered.

So let us pause to consider the precious gift we have been given; imagine how we can best apply the power that comes with living in a free society; and act to advance justice, faith and peace.

With gratitude for the service and sacrifices of our veterans, I offer our thanks.

Sincerely,

Joseph E. Nyre, Ph.D.

President
