Dr. Anthony Clark
On Thursday, November 7th at 5 p.m. at Bethany Hall, Seton Hall University's Office of the Provost, Center for Catholic Studies and the Program in Catholic Studies are hosting the special seminar, "Understanding the Holy See-China Agreement."
In recent years global Catholic media has shown increasing interest in what appears to be a new era of Sino-Vatican rapprochement. Within the Catholic Church apparent agreements between the Vatican and the Communist government have stirred heated debate.
In this talk Dr. Anthony Clark will consider how the long history of Roman Catholic Christianity within China has influenced Vatican decisions regarding the Church's relationship with China, especially how China's post-1949 Communist government became a protagonist of the Christian community.
Dr. Clark's talk will confront how the recent Vatican agreement with China's government conforms to and conflicts with the policies and opinions of former popes; he will consider how we might better understand the current state of Catholicism within the People's Republic of China.
