Seton Hall University, with its continued focus on servant leadership, recently honored
some of its up-and-coming servant leaders with the Student Servant Leader Award –
an accolade honoring students who exude the characteristics of servant leadership
on campus as well as off campus.
These five recipients have shown exemplary servant leadership qualities during their
time at Seton Hall:
- Thomas Cadmus
- Veronica Cervone
- Darby DeBonis
- Cristina Fernandez
- Cecelia Pateman
Thomas Cadmus is a graduating senior who majored in social work and religious studies. He has shown
true humility in the exemplary levels of service in which he continues to partake.
His service has focused on his own community and includes weekly visits to the Daughters
of Miriam Center for the Aged and serving on the National Association of Social Workers

Veronica Cervone is a graduating senior who majored in social and behavioral sciences and has been
a involved in DOVE since her first days at Seton Hall. She has served locally as well
as in West Virginia, Jamaica, and El Salvador. Since then she has shown exemplary
leadership to her fellow volunteers through her tireless service which she carries

Darby DeBonis is a graduating senior who majored in nursing and philosophy and is being honored
with a Servant Leader Award for her leadership within the Seton Hall Food Recovery
Network chapter where she serves as vice president. She has left her impact on the
Student Government Association and the Student Nurses Association. Her passion and

Cristina Fernandez is a junior majoring in biology and a Seton Hall athlete on the cross-country team.
Her work at home and abroad showed inspirational leadership and personal growth. She
became Chapter President for MEDLIFE at Seton Hall in her sophomore year and has travelled
through South America setting up mobile clinics in impoverished communities. Learn more about Christina's work here »
Cecelia Pateman is a junior majoring in education. Throughout her time at Seton Hall, she has actively
sought out opportunities to serve those in need both at home and abroad. She has contributed
countless hours to DOVE's weekly service programs and her international service trip
to El Salvador. She is also being recognized for her on-going service to Bethlehem

The ideal servant leader is an individual whose leadership is contingent on the service
of others, rather than service to others. The ideal candidate for the Student Servant
Leader Award is content with serving the needs of others and participating in service
that is part and parcel of leadership. The recipients of this award are selected based
upon the depth of their overall service career, as well as on the merit of their most
profound service experience. Significant aspects of the candidates' experiences that
are considered include but are not limited to:
- Continuous commitment to service
- Call to service; inspiration to lead through service
- Significance of a selected service experience
- Application of intellectual skills during the experience and demonstrated learning
from the service experience
Seton Hall University wishes to congratulate the recipients of the Sixteenth Annual
