Each week Professor Bryan Pilkington holds a conversation with leading experts from medicine, nursing, and the health sciences, as well as political theorists, economists, ethicists and philosophers.
Focused on the impact of COVID-19, the topic of conversation this week will be "Children: Education and Safety in the Time of COVID," and will feature a panel of multi-disciplinary experts, including Marie Foley, Ph.D., R.N., C.N.L., dean and professor in the College of Nursing at Seton Hall University.
Dean Foley's research interests include topics in school nursing, advocacy, child temperament, ADHD and parenting. She has published articles on delegation in the school setting, family adversity and parenting of children with ADHD and Auditory Processing Disorders. She has presented at international, national and regional research conferences and is a member of the National Association of School Nurses and the School Nurse Educators Special Interest Group, The New Jersey School Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International, Eastern Nursing Research Society and the National League for Nursing. She has won the National Association of School Nurses Outstanding School Nurse Educator Award as well as the Journal for Specialists in Pediatric Nursing Research Article Award.
"My background first and foremost is as a pediatric nurse," said Dean Foley. "And a failure to distinguish the needs of children from those of adults in the medical world – especially during a pandemic – can literally be fatal. As we set the stage for reopening, it is important that we come together and begin to outline age-appropriate policy geared toward mental and physical health as well as efficacy."
The panel will convene on Wednesday June 3, 12:30 -1:30 EDT. Formed with the belief that we arrive at the best answers to challenging ethical questions by practically reasoning together, "Children: Education and Safety in the Time of COVID," is the tenth installment of this weekly program.
"COVID-19 has impacted children in various ways and divergent accounts of its impact have led to confusion, as well as differing policy recommendations and practices," said Pilkington. "At the end of the day, we cannot revert to thinking of children merely as mini-adults. The complexities of childhood should be accommodated through law, policy and messaging, and safeguarding children in the time of COVID requires such attention. This panel is intended to be an informed step in that direction."
Pilkington, an associate professor in the School of Health and Medical Sciences at Seton Hall University and the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University, serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy and the Editorial Advisory Boards of HealthCare Ethics Committee Forum and Christian Bioethics, and is a Junior Scholar at the Paul Ramsey Institute
