On Saturday, September 7, Msgr. Joseph Chapel presented The Moral Life of the Deacon and Sacramental Identity to the Paterson Permanent Diaconate candidates and their wives at St. Paul Inside the Walls located in Madison, NJ. Msgr. Chapel's two-part presentation began with key factors that contribute to the moral life of a deacon including the Christian Call to service, the response to that call and the implications for deacons to be able to bring people back to the fundamental calling from God. The second part of Msgr. Chapel's presentation focused on the Deacon's Sacramental Identity. He talked about deacons being the bridge between the people of the world and the priests. Msgr. Chapel illustrated the deacon's role in leading others deeper into the Sacraments and bringing them to a deeper love of God.
The Center for Diaconal Formation continues to grow and expand its operations since its inception. Beginning in the fall 2011, the Center enrolled its first graduate-level academic formation classes of permanent diaconate candidates with 38 students from the dioceses of Metuchen and Paterson. Later that year we began providing Saturday pastoral formation education to both of the dioceses. Over the past two years the Center has grown by nearly 100% , adding 30 students from the Archdiocese of Newark in the fall of 2012, and a second cohort of 14 students from the Diocese of Metuchen in the fall of 2013. In addition, the Center is now collaborating with the Archdiocese of Newark and the Diocese of Paterson to offer their current deacons continuing education sessions.
Upcoming formation sessions will include presentations in the areas of Classical Catholic Books, Documents of Vatican II, Mary and the Saints, Lay Leadership Development, Catholic identity, Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue and Civilization of Love. Continuing Formation sessions will include Evangelization Resources for Deacons, The Sacrament of Marriage and Holy Orders, and The Theology of the Body.
