Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society Making Strides at SHU

Seton Hall’s Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education, Xi Gamma Chapter, had another successful year of programming under the leadership of President Rosemary Coyle, Vice President Audrena Campagna, Historian Antonio Totino, Secretary Marian Behnan and Treasurer Joanna Rose.

The fall semester began with a KDP Meet & Greet Pizza Night. Members contributed great ideas for programming as well as community service and expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming year.

KDP Holiday PartyThis year’s Kappa Delta Pi Holiday Gathering/Gift Drive resulted in the largest member turnout for attendance and donations. Several dedicated members still made the extra effort of purchasing several gifts even if they could not attend. Five large bags were delivered to SHU’s DOVE Office with 75+ gifts for young people ages 10-18, an age group that the chapter wanted to target since it presents more of a challenge when collecting toy donations.

In honor of Public Service Month, sponsored by The Career Center at Seton Hall University, Kappa Delta Pi presented Raise Your Glass: A Closer Look at Bullying through Awareness & Empowerment featuring:

  • Patricia Wright, Superintendent of Spring Lake, NJ; New Jersey Bar Foundation Consultant & Co-author of the Foundations’ Anti-bullying Curriculum
  • Detective William Lynch, North Brunswick Police Department

Over 98 students, faculty, administrators and staff were in attendance.

CPR TrainingKDP Members and Seton Hall students were given an opportunity to become certified for two years in Adult and Child CPR during Xi Gamma’s Become a Hero. Save a Life program which included a 3 hour training/assessment, keychain mouth guard and certification. This program was coordinated by Xi Gamma member and now newly elected President, Christopher Ley.

The final semester workshop included Daniel Kocsis, SHU alumnus and middle school teacher in New Hampshire, who spoke to Xi Gamma members about his project, Letters to Veterans, which involved his students communicating with U.S. Veterans and having some Veterans visit the classrooms. Kocsis was featured in the Winter/Spring 2010 issue of the Seton Hall Magazine: The Simple Power of Thank You by Mike Cullity. Daniel shared some of the wonderful correspondences with participants and proposed a letter writing service project for Xi Gamma.

KDP Induction 2011Elections for Xi Gamma Executive Board Members were held in March. Congratulations to our 2011 Xi Gamma E-board!

  • President: Chris Ley
  • Vice President: Christina Tenore
  • Secretary: Tracy Napier
  • Treasurer: Talesha Grubbs
  • Historian: Kathryn Becker

On March 22, many of our KDP Members along with the college's SEA Pirates volunteered for Kids at College at SHU. Members played hosts to 4th graders from Madison Park Elementary School in Old Bridge Township and gave them a snapshot of college life. Students experienced a campus tour, classroom interaction with Education majors in Dr. Mueller's Math Methods in Diverse Classrooms course and pizza with our Pirate Mascot.

Finally, Xi Gamma Chapter proudly welcomed 190 new Kappa Delta Pi members (our highest membership yet) during the KDP Annual Induction Ceremony on Sunday, April 3, 2011.

We are extremely happy with our membership’s participation in the various social and professional development opportunities offered this year and look forward to continuing to make KDP a visible organization and example of servant leadership on campus.
