At Seton Hall University Libraries, we are proud to offer our students the opportunity to explore and discover their passions through the DataLab initiative. The DataLab is an initiative funded by the Office of the Provost that allows undergraduate students to gain real-world experience in research and data analysis. This initiative is managed by the Research Data Services team and seeks new faculty applications each semester with funding from the Office of the Provost.

It is inspiring to see the growth and success of our students, and this is certainly true for Malik Redwood. As a junior Computer Science major, Malik enrolled in the DataLab during the Fall 2022 semester, where he had the opportunity to receive weekly training from Data Specialist, Samah Alshrief, Ph.D., on how to analyze quantitative data using Python. These training sessions not only provided Malik with valuable skills but also allowed him to discover his passion for data science.

Malik is an example of what the DataLab is all about. Not only did he take full advantage of the opportunity to learn and grow in the field of data science, but he also used his newfound skills to create and run a live coding workshop, "Python for Quantitative Methods," which he ran on March 27, 2023 at the RDAP (Research Data Access and Preservation) conference. This is an incredible accomplishment for an undergraduate student and a great representation of Seton Hall University. The RDAP Summit is a three-day event for all who work toward management, access, and preservation of research data.

Earlier in the semester, Malik presented at the University Libraries Love Data Week 2023 conference, highlighting his growth and knowledge in the field of data analysis. We are proud of Malik and the success he has achieved through the DataLab. We look forward to seeing his continued growth in the field of data science and the impact he will make in the future.

We hope that Malik's story will inspire other undergraduate students to take advantage of the opportunities the DataLab provides. Enrolling in the DataLab can open doors to new possibilities and set you on the path to a rewarding career in data science and research across disciplines.
