Education Challenges Facing South Africa: August 2010 Study  

South Africa StudentsWith the end of Apartheid and the creation of a new nation, the Republic of South Africa (RSA) has undergone a massive transformation which includes the restructuring of its educational system at the elementary, secondary and higher education levels. To help us better understand how these changes have shaped the RSA and the challenges the nation is currently facing the Department of Education Leadership, Management and Policy (ELMP) is hosting a study tour to South Africa in August 2010. Our host will be the University of the Free State (UFS) in Bloemfontein. Enrolling more than 28,000 students the UFS is one of South Africa's national research universities.


  • Depart JFK on 31 July 2010; arrive in South Africa on 1 August
  • Depart South Africa on 10 August 2010; arrive at JFK on 11 August 2010

Who can participate: Program is open graduate students as well faculty and administrators in higher and the K-12 education sectors.

Tour Leader: Joseph Stetar, Professor of Education will serve as study leader. Prof. Stetar received an honorary doctorate from the UFS in 2002 where he also serves as a Professor Honorarius and a member of the UFS's International Advisory Board.

Tentative Program:

  • South Africa BuildingOrientation seminars at UFS; meetings with university faculty, school leaders, MOE etc.
  • Visits to colleges, universities and schools in Bloemfontein area
  • Joint seminars with graduate students & faculty from the UFS Faculty of Education
  • Visit to university and schools in QwaQwa region of Free State
  • Visit to Johannesburg and school in Soweto

Estimate cost: $2,950 per person

  • Includes airfare, double accommodations, transportation in South Africa and breakfast on most days and other meals on occasion. Expect to add approximately $350 if single accommodation is required.
  • SHU / ELMP graduate credit will be available at off-campus rate

Deposits: A non-refundable $1,000.00 deposit is due on 1 April 2010. Balance of trip cost due by 15 June 2010.
