Division of Volunteer Efforts Hosts Annual Toy and Food Drives

DOVE Toy DriveThe Christmas season is upon us, and Seton Hall's Division of Volunteer Efforts (DOVE) is once again offering ways that you can help make the holidays a little brighter for those in utmost need.

DOVE's annual toy drive provides gifts to the Maplewood South Orange School District, the Don Bosco Youth Center, and St. John's Soup Kitchen. In addition to local sites, DOVE donates gifts for the impoverished children in Appalachia, West Virginia, which they have done for over 25 years. Many of these children may not have received a Christmas gift if not for DOVE's donations. The gifts will be delivered by DOVE staff and volunteers.

Seton Hall students, employees, and alumni are encouraged to get involved by taking a "toy tag" from DOVE. Each toy tag includes a child's name and his or her Christmas wish list. This year's wish lists include play dough, superheroes, and games. Students who take a toy tag should shop for the child based on what is written on the tag and bring their unwrapped gifts back to the DOVE office, located in Campus Ministry in the Boland Hall basement, by December 9.

On December 10, DOVE will host a toy wrapping party to help sort, wrap, and deliver the gifts. The drive is always a huge success and a phenomenal way to start the Christmas season. All students are welcome to participate.

DOVE's Food DriveIn addition to the toy drive, DOVE's 2019 food drive is in full force. Every year, Seton Hall's residence halls and academic buildings are lined with the "DOVE Food Drive" labeled bins, which collect over 750 pounds of non-perishable items within three short weeks. The drive is concurrent with DOVE's "Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week," which aims to bring awareness of the poverty issues surrounding the Seton Hall community, as well as to bring relief to some of these areas by recruiting student volunteers to go out into the community and bring supplies to the homeless.

During the Thanksgiving season, students are encouraged to donate food items to the bins to further help support the homeless and hungry in the community surrounding Seton Hall. The supplies obtained through the food drive benefit St. John's Soup Kitchen and Our Lady of Sorrows Food Pantry. Both locations are highly dependent upon donations to continue providing relief to the community around Seton Hall, and the DOVE food drive helps make this possible.

The food drive is being held until December 9. Any donation of non-perishable goods may be brought directly to the DOVE office.
