U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, U.S. Representative Bill Pascrell, Jr., and U.S. Representative Donald Payne, Jr. will join fire safety advocates, local officials and university representatives to announce the introduction of a bipartisan bill, the Campus Fire Safety Education Act, on campus on Monday, January 30, at 10 a.m. The University community is invited to attend the program scheduled to take place in front of Boland Hall, weather permitting, or in the Jubilee Hall Fourth Floor Atrium if necessary.
Creating the Campus Fire Safety Education Grant Program, institutions of higher education could apply on their own or in collaboration with nonprofit fire safety organizations and public safety departments to receive funding to initiate, expand or improve fire safety education programs on campuses. With a high number of student fires occurring off-campus, schools will be encouraged to use the funding to educate students living in on and off-campus housing.
"Seton Hall has been a leader in the effort to promote fire safety on college campuses for nearly two decades. Just this month, we marked the 17th anniversary of the Boland Hall residence fire that claimed the lives of three of our students. We welcome this legislation, which serves as a strong support for the educational programming that can make a life-or-death difference to all our college students," said Tracy Gottlieb, Ph.D., Vice President of Student Services.
