Updates from the ARC

ARC Tutors

Some of the ARC staff at monthly meeting

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) welcomed a new Director in January. Nicole Paternoster began her career in academic assistance as a peer tutor at Essex County College. Nicole was offered the job as a peer tutor after spending so much time in the tutoring center! She then went on to work as a Supplemental Instructor and adjunct English instructor at ECC after she graduated from Rutgers Newark.

For the past eight years, Nicole worked at Union County College as an Educational Support Coordinator in their Academic Learning Center. She has been proud to be involved in the PA/NJ region of the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) during her career, serving as secretary and president. Nicole believes in the power of peer support and is working closely with her entire staff to ensure that SHU students are given the best services possible to help them reach their academic goals.

The Academic Resource Center, located on the second floor of Arts & Sciences, offers in-person and virtual peer tutoring, peer academic coaching, and Supplemental Instruction for chemistry and biology courses. The ARC also oversees the Tutors in Residence program in Boland and Aquinas Halls.

Upcoming Events:

  • The academic coaches host weekly workshops on notetaking and stress management topics. The sessions are held on Wednesdays from 5 pm-6 pm in A&S 206.
  • The ARC and the Math Learning Lab are raffling a Spring basket. Just attend an in-person tutoring session, an academic coaching session, or workshop and receive a raffle ticket.
  • SHU Tutopia will be held on May 11 in Jubilee Hall. We will have walk-in tutoring, workshops, prizes, and food!
