Rev. John M. Ballweg will be remembered at a Liturgy and Gathering on Monday, June 27, 2011 at 7 p.m. at Holy Spirit Church, 971 Suburban Road, Union, NJ. All those whose lives Father Ballweg touched by his teaching, ministry and friendship are warmly welcome.
Father Ballweg, a Roman Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Newark, died on June 27, 2010.
Father Ballweg was born on May 2, 1930, in Elizabeth and was raised in Rahway. He attended St. Mary's Grammar School, St. Peter's High School in New Brunswick, and Seton Hall College and Immaculate Conception Seminary. Father Ballweg was ordained on May 26, 1956. His first assignment was Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Elizabeth. He was assigned as a part-time teacher at St. Mary's High School in Elizabeth, then he was assigned full time at Seton Hall University in the Religious Studies Department.
While at Seton Hall University, he was made dean of students. Later, he was appointed priest personnel director for the Archdiocese of Newark. Father Ballweg taught at Chestnut College in Chestnut, Pa., where he taught pastoral ministry and was spiritual director. He gave retreats at the Cape May Retreat Center in Elberon and at Madison, Conn. He had been a growth counselor at Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington and at Seton Hall University in South Orange. He was chair of the Archdiocese of Newark Committee on Team Ministry in the Church of Newark, N.J. He gave many days of reconciliation to laity, religious and clergy.
