School of Medicine Deans Receive Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine Awards

Deans Bonita Stanton, M.D. and David Kountz, M.D. have received the Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine Awards.

Bonita Stanton, M.D., is the founding dean of Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University and president, Academic Enterprise, Hackensack Meridian Health.

David Kountz, M.D., MBA, is the founding associate dean of Diversity and Equity at Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University, co-chief academic officer and vice president of Academic Diversity, Hackensack Meridian Health, and vice president, Academic Affairs, Hackensack Meridian Health Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

Dr. Stanton, who received the Outstanding Medical Educator Award, was recognized as an innovator and a visionary in leading the development of the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University.

"I am deeply honored to have received this wonderful award," said Dean Stanton. "This award recognizes the significance of the Vision and Mission that the entire Dean's Cabinet has developed and implemented for the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University. The vision and mission—which direct every aspect of our School of Medicine – speak to our determination that through the efforts of our graduates, all persons in New Jersey will enjoy the same opportunity for health and wellness, regardless of socioeconomic status or race and that these outcomes will be achieved at an affordable cost."

Dr. Kountz, who received the Verice M. Mason Community Service Leader Award, was recognized for his commitment to community outreach, dedication to the promotion of diversity in the health care environment, and passion for educating and inspiring students to pursue careers in the health professions.

"It is a privilege to develop the pipeline programs and play a role in inspiring the next generation of physicians and other health care professionals," said Dean Kountz. "I am honored to have had our work recognized through this award, as it stands as yet another sign that our work has taken root and is beginning to bear the fruit of a cadre of practitioners committed to the health and well being of our communities."

The 2019 awards were presented at a ceremony on May 1 in East Brunswick. All profits from the event supported medical and health care student scholarships.
