Graduating students of Asian Studies M.A. Program will:

  1. Develop critical thinking abilities so as to be keen on a broad perspective of Asia as well as vision into vital areas of specialization; and be aware of, and alerted to world events on an independent basis.
  2. Obtain a mutual understanding and sensitivity to cultures other than one’s own and promote international inclinations toward peace: non-Asians will become familiar with, and appreciate many dimension of Asian societies; Asian students will have deeper understanding of their own histories and roots – and, additionally, of Western cultures and outlooks.
  3. Cultivate strong language skills in both English and Chinese or Japanese so that they will be competent for the work in their chosen professions such as in diplomacy, governmental work, investigative and service professions, teaching, and other fields which demand high aptitude in communication skills.
  4. Develop career objectives with an international perspective so that they will be prepared emotionally and academically to greet unique opportunities and challenges in the light of global business interactions and international political developments.

Specifically, for students in the Area Studies Track (including the dual Master of Arts degree with the School of Diplomacy), they will:    

  1. Gain a good proficiency in Chinese or Japanese.
  2. Have advanced backgrounds and learning about histories and cultures of Asian societies.
  3. Be able to conduct independent research related to Asia or Asian matters.

For students in the Chinese Teaching Track, they will:    

  1. Achieve a near-native proficiency in English if they are not native speakers.
  2. Be knowledgeable about Chinese civilization, history, linguistics, literatures.
  3. Understand theories, practices, and issues of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
  4. Be competent in teaching Chinese as a foreign language for the K-16 setting.
