Panel on Research, Ethics and Expertise in a Pandemic Features President of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities

Professor Bryan Pilkington
Each week Professor Bryan Pilkington holds a conversation with leading experts from medicine, nursing, and the health sciences, as well as political theorists, economists, ethicists and philosophers.
Focused on the impact of COVID-19, the topic of conversation this week will be "False Hope Amid the Exuberance of Discovery: Research Ethics in the Time of COVID" and will feature a panel of multi-disciplinary experts from around the country, including Ana Iltis, president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH).
In addition to her role in the ASBH, Ana S. Iltis, Ph.D. is Director of the Center for Bioethics, Health and Society; Carlson Professor of University Studies; and Professor of Philosophy at Wake Forest University.
Prior to joining Wake Forest, she was Associate Professor of Health Care Ethics and Ph.D. Program Director in the Center for Health Care Ethics at Saint Louis University and held an appointment in the Department of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis where she taught research ethics. She has published widely in bioethics, serves on several National Institutes of Health data safety monitoring boards and holds a wide range of editorial positions, including: Co-Editor of the Annals of Bioethics book series (Routledge), Senior Associate Editor of The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy (Oxford University Press), and Co-Editor of Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics (Johns Hopkins University Press).
"COVID-19 has reinforced the importance of expertise, innovation and discovery for the health and well-being of human beings across the globe," said Pilkington. "But scientific validity is at the heart of ethical research and shortcuts can prove deadly. The urgency of our needs as a community can sometimes encourage hasty work and the dissemination of inaccurate information— and neither serves the public well."
"This panel, with researchers and research ethicists, will focus on the challenge of performing research carefully and fully while lives are hanging in the balance, as well as the importance of sharing accurate information publicly," he concluded.
Pilkington, an associate professor in the School of Health and Medical Sciences at Seton Hall University and the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University, serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy and the Editorial Advisory Boards of HealthCare Ethics Committee Forum and Christian Bioethics, and is a Junior Scholar at the Paul Ramsey Institute.
In addition to Ana S. Iltis, the panel will include:
- Elli Gourna Paleoudis, M.S., Ph.D., Manager, Investigator Initiated Research Program, Office of Research Administration, Hackensack Meridian Health
- Zhiyong Han, Ph.D., Professor of Medical Biochemistry, Department of Medical Sciences, Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University
- Carl Coleman, J.D., Professor of Law at Seton Hall University School of Law and former Bioethics and Law Adviser at the World Health Organization.
