Dean Brian B. Shulman standingDr. Brian B. Shulman, PhD, CCC-SLP, Dean of the School of Health and Medical Sciences (SHMS), and Dr. Nina Capone Singleton, PhD, CCC-SLP, Associate Professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology, were interviewed about the influences of language development in children, with an emphasis on pragmatics and semantics.

The pair recently published the third edition of their text Language Development: Foundations, Processes, and Clinical Applications, Third Edition (Jones & Bartlett Learning 2020) and had an opportunity to discuss elements of the book during the 20Q segment with Dr. Ann Kummer, PhD, CCC-SLP, on Speechpathology.com. The website allows unlimited learning opportunities for Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) and has access to over 350 evidence-based online courses in over 25 topic areas.

In the article, Dr. Kummer writes:
"Drs. Capone Singleton and Shulman are experts in language development… these authors are so knowledgeable and passionate about this topic, and they provide an overview of what influences language development, with a particular emphasis on pragmatics and semantics."

Nina Capone Singleton 2In this 20Q segment, Drs. Shulman and Singleton were asked 20 questions including how the environment plays a role in language development, if epigenetics has a role in speech impairment, why children stop using words, and so much more.

They explain to Dr. Kummer about how internationally adopted children can acquire their adoptive language within two-to-three- years of adoption, that social engagement between caregiver and child forms the basis for all language form, and that once a toddler begins to learn new words, the newness of the newly learned word takes priority over the word they used before.
