For his passion and enthusiasm for education and his dedication to the community, Seton Hall University and the College of Education and Human Services are pleased to present Timothy Purnell, Ed.D. '08 with the 2019 Many Are One Service Award.
Purnell is an innovative leader, strategic planner and inspiring educator who serves as the chief executive officer of the American Montessori Society (AMS). Striving for excellence in education has been of utmost importance throughout his career, serving in roles as educator, administrator, superintendent and now as CEO.
Purnell is also currently an adjunct at Montclair State University and an executive board member for both District Administration and Hope + Future.
Prior to AMS, Purnell served as the superintendent of Somerville Schools and on the New Jersey State Board of Examiners, was superintendent of Harding Township, and previously held positions as a principal, vice principal and science teacher.
Purnell is a nationally recognized presenter and keynote speaker, speaking at numerous events including a TEDx talk: "Truth in Leadership: #getoffyourisland."
He has been widely recognized throughout his career, including his selection as one of just 100 educators to attend President Obama's ConnectED Initiative at the White House.
Purnell holds a strong belief that children must have a voice in their own educational journey and provides advocacy for continuing the quality of Montessori education.
