During this year's University Weekend, the Seton Hall community joined the SHU Women's Soccer game vs. St John's to celebrate the life of former student athlete and education major Mary Jennings. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Mary's passing, the SHU Women's Soccer team wore green Jennings jerseys, acknowledging Mary's battle with liver cancer and her legacy.
Mary L. Jennings was a devoted Secondary Education/History major, and a passionate athlete on Seton Hall University's Women's Soccer team. She lived her life with meaning, service to others, and brought love, happiness, laughter and learning wherever she went. She impacted the lives of so many students, both at Seton Hall and in local schools.
Through the hard work and dedicated fundraising efforts of Mary's family, fellow classmates, Seton Hall administration, faculty, staff and various community members, the Mary L. Jennings Memorial Scholarship was created. Since 2008, this endowed scholarship has been awarded annually to the Seton Hall University student who best exemplifies the spirit and dedication to education exhibited by Mary Jennings. This year's recipient, Elementary and Special Education major Amber Ingram, stated:
"After reading Mary Jennings' bio and hearing about her goals and ambitions, I see so much of myself in her. Education and staying active are two very important aspects of my life. I just hope that with the financial help of this scholarship I can be at east half of the woman that she was. I can't thank her and her family enough for their contributions to not only the Seton Hall community, but also my life."
Every year, the university community comes together in a strong collaborative effort to raise awareness and funds for the Mary L. Jennings Scholarship to ensure that future students with the same commitment to service that Mary possessed will be able to pursue their educational goals at Seton Hall.
The Athletics Department and College of Education and Human Services are extremely grateful to all SHU department and student organization co-sponsors who supported this memorial scholarship game and fundraiser.
