Curriculum: Ph.D. Higher Education Leadership, Management and Policy

Program Requirements

This program requires a master's degree upon admission and at least 45 credits at Seton Hall.

Matriculation

Doctoral students will be considered for matriculation after completing 12 core course credits and by demonstrating competence in the core courses by successfully passing a qualifying written examination. The 12-credit core provides a common educational experience to doctoral students in both the Ph.D. and Ed.D. programs. The four courses include two courses with specific higher education content (Historical Development of American Education and Organization and Governance of Higher Education), one course that provide a foundation for research skills (Directed Research) and a policy analysis course that provides a foundation for understanding how public policy for education is shaped. The core courses are:

Upon completion of the core, students must pass a qualifying examination in which they are given the choice of one out of two writing prompts concerning selected modern issues in higher education and asked questions drawing on content from the core courses.

Other Requirements:

  • Dissertation Proposal: Students must have a documented, successful defense of their dissertation proposal, signed and dated by dissertation committee members. A successful proposal defense is a required intermediate stage of the dissertation process. More detail is in the department dissertation handbook.
  • Dissertation: Students must complete a dissertation and successfully defend their work with their dissertation committee. More detail is in the department dissertation handbook."
