Seton Hall School of Diplomacy and International Relations undergraduate student, Jadira Cardona, was awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, a competitive program sponsored by the United States Department of State. The Gilman Scholarship provides funding for students with financial need to study or intern abroad, opening doors for those who may not otherwise have the opportunity.

Jadira, who has long been passionate about exploring global issues and cultures, has said that to her, the scholarship is more than just financial support.

She explained,

As a low-income student, money has always been a problem. The Gilman program opened a door for me to take what I’m studying in the classroom such as diplomacy, law and international relations by using it in real-world experiences when studying abroad.

This past year, the Gilman Scholarship funded Jadira’s summer 2025 semester study abroad in Liverpool, England, where she immersed herself in the city’s complex history with the transatlantic slave trade, comparing it to her research on modern human trafficking. In addition, she took coursework in Global Business, tying the economic background of the United Kingdom to her studies in human rights and diplomacy.

However, Jadira’s time in Liverpool was not confined to the classroom. She valued the opportunity to experience daily life in a new country, meet people from diverse backgrounds and grow independently. “This program really allowed me to network with other people and enhance my skills,” she said, “to help me in my long-term goals of pursuing law and diplomacy.”

One component of the Gilman Scholarship is the service project, in which recipients share their experiences with their communities at home. Jadira is especially excited about this portion of the program. She hopes to inspire other students, both in high school and college, who may believe that studying abroad is out of reach and show them that an experience like this is possible.

The impact of the scholarship extends beyond academics for Jadira, and the experience has shaped her career ambitions and given her a stronger sense of direction. “It strengthens my commitment in wanting to be a diplomat lawyer to combat poverty and human trafficking occurring globally,” she explained. “It gave me confidence into wanting to aim higher in my academic and professional journey.”

In reflecting on her achievement, Jadira expressed gratitude for the role of faith in her journey. “None of this would have been possible without my Lord and Savior,” she said. “When I opened it and saw that I was selected for the award I was filled with joy and tears. God has heard my prayers, and He made it possible.”

Through her studies, service and faith, Jadira embodies the mission of the Gilman Scholarship, expanding access to international education and empowering the next generation of leaders.
